🛕 Discover Chiang Mai’s Sacred Path to World Heritage

Seven temples. More than 700 years of history. One journey into the heart of Lanna.

In Chiang Mai, temples are everywhere. Hidden down Old City lanes, surrounded by forest, or sitting high above the city, each holds a different piece of Lanna’s story.

Seven of them are now part of a bigger conversation about Chiang Mai’s heritage. In 2015, “Monuments, Sites and Cultural Landscape of Chiang Mai, Capital of Lanna” was placed on UNESCO’s Tentative List, recognizing not just individual monuments, but the connection between the ancient city, its sacred sites, communities, nature, and Doi Suthep.

Here are seven places that help tell that story.

Start at the Beginning:

Regarded as Chiang Mai’s first temple, Wat Chiang Man dates back to the founding of the city by King Mangrai in 1296. More than 700 years later, you can still walk through the place where Chiang Mai’s story began.

Meet the Giant:

You cannot miss the enormous ancient chedi of Wat Chedi Luang. Rising in the middle of the Old City, it recalls the days when Chiang Mai was a powerful political and religious center of the Lanna Kingdom.

Look Closer:

At Wat Phra Singh

, the beauty is in the details. Its architecture, craftsmanship, and religious art offer a glimpse into the distinctive Lanna style that continues to define northern Thailand today.

Follow the Legend:

A famous legend connects Wat Suan Dok

with Doi Suthep. A sacred Buddha relic is said to have divided into two, with one part remaining here and the other carried up the mountain, eventually leading to the establishment of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Go Underground:

Leave the grand temples behind and wander into the forest at Wat Umong. Its ancient tunnels and peaceful setting reveal another side of Chiang Mai, where Buddhism, architecture, and nature come together.

Discover Lanna’s Legacy:

Takes you back to a time when Chiang Mai was an important center of Buddhist scholarship. Its distinctive architecture reveals how influences from beyond the kingdom found their way into Lanna and evolved into something distinctly local.

Finish Above the City:

End the journey above Chiang Mai at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. From here, the city, mountain, temples, and surrounding landscape begin to feel connected, exactly the relationship at the heart of Chiang Mai’s wider heritage story.

These seven temples are not simply seven beautiful places to check off a list.

Together, they take you from the birth of Chiang Mai to the height of the Lanna Kingdom, through its art, legends, Buddhist traditions, and relationship with nature.

And they are not frozen in the past. Monks still study here, local communities still come to make merit, and traditions continue within temple grounds today.

As Chiang Mai continues its journey toward possible UNESCO World Heritage recognition, there is a different way to explore the city.

Don’t just visit the temples. Follow the story.
